Native American Artists

The Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990 (P.L. 101-644) defines an Indian as a member of any federally or State recognized Indian tribe, or an individual certified as an Indian artisan by an Indian tribe.

Artists and artisans meeting these criteria are, by definition, Native American Artists.

Some, though, are angry with this distinction. They do recognize the need to stop fraudulent practices of sellers of imitation crafts, but they do not feel comfortable with the Euro-American law determining who is and who is not an Indian.

There are those who live Indian, dress Indian, worship Indian, care for Indian elders, raise Indian young, and preserve and perpetuate Indian culture, yet do not have Indian blood.

Here, at Native-American-Arts.com, we do not mean to exclude such a person, such an artist, but we do support the measures taken to protect genuine Indian art and artifacts.

Our featured artists are legally recognized Native American Artists.
